Abuse Investigation

Jesus said, “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap.” Luke 6:38a.

The Senior Center in San Pedro investigates abuse claims against our senior and disabled population. They provide nutrition and other life-enhancing services to seniors. Additionally they provide employment services to adults and youth and work with employers in times of hiring and downsizing. They offer mediation services to avoid court filings. Their Human Relations Commission is dedicated to fostering positive inter-group relations.

When they learned about the challenges Kim, a senior citizen, was having they called us to see if we could help. She lives in low income housing and her only income is her SSI check. This is barely enough to cover her rent, food and utilities. All too often she is left with no money to purchase even basic needs.

SCSP shared with us that Kim was in need of a few appliances like a toaster, blender and a microwave. We called Kim and did an intake to discover that she was also in need of food and a couch. She had no money to purchase these and she didn’t even know where to turn. But the Senior Center did, when they turned to us and we turned to our network partners to help Kim.

We contacted our Network Partner, Heavenly Treasures Thrift Store. They are more than just a thrift store, they’re an outreach ministry of King’s Way Community Church in Lomita. They stepped up and provided a toaster; Doors of Hope provided a blender and a microwave and Bethany Christian Church provided Kim with food. Then within a week Heavenly Treasures had a couch that was taken to Kim's apartment!
